Goldberg sale 128, lot 1253
G128-1253r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1253 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $1,620. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes, 1701-V (Troyes). Louis XIV. Struck over earlier type. Rare date. The only example graded at PCGS. PCGS graded AU-55." This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or aux 8 L, struck 1700-04, was succeeded by the louis d'or aux insignes struck 1704-09.

Recorded mintage: unknown rf (none on new blanks) but not rare[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 24-26 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 414, Dr/2 № 270, Duplessy 1443A, Fr-436; Gad-253; KM-334.20.
