Mexico 1876-Mo BH 8 reales

from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72316

This specimen was lot 72316 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1876-Mo BH. Mexico City Mint. PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield. Quite alluringly toned, this choice, iridescent specimen presents a good deal of underlying radiance and tremendous eye appeal." In 1873, the Mexican government, facing rejection of its balance scale peso in its main export market of Asia, resumed the production of cap-and-ray eight reales. This late period of 1873-97 saw large mintages and few rarities. This date is common along with 1876/5 and 1876/4 overdates.
