This specimen is a common date of a series struck 1869-90 at the Potosi mint, which closed in 1895. The SCWC records an overmintmark (“Pi/Zs”) and an overassayer (“R/B”) in addition to the regular date. This twenty-five centavos piece replaced the two reales struck since colonial times. It, in turn, was replaced by a smaller 20 centavos piece in 1898. The first specimen was lot 9129 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $258.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Potosi. 25 Centavos, 1890-PiR/B. Light attractive toning. NGC MS-65."
