Künker sale 294, lot 3588

This specimen was lot 3588 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €6,500 (about US$8,761 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-CALENBERG-HANNOVER, Georg II. 1727-1760. Dukat 1739, Clausthal. Ausbeute der Harzer Gruben. Harzgold. Münzmeister Christian Philipp Spangenberg. Gekröntes, vierfeldiges Wappen//Roß springt l. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Prachtexemplar mit feiner Goldtönung. Fast Stempelglanz. (Germany, electorate of Hannover, George II, 1727-60, ducat of 1739, Clausthal mint, for the Harz mines. Obverse: crowned quartered arms; reverse: stallion springs left. Very rare, prooflike with fine gold toning; about uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1730, 1735-41, 1746, 1750, 1756 but remains rare, probably because the yield of the mines was low. The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866.
