Hannover 1737 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 5713 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$4,175 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Georg II. 1727-1760. 1/2 Reichstaler 1737, Clausthal, auf den Tod seiner Gemahlin Wilhelmine Karoline Charlotte, Tochter des Markgrafen Johann Friedrich von Brandenburg-Ansbach, am 1. Dezember. RR Hübsche Patina, fast vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Slg. Erich Reichardt, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 49, Osnabrück 1999, Nr. 1822. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, George II, 1727-60, half thaler of 1737, Clausthal mint, on the death of his wife Wilhelmine Karoline Charlotte, daughter of Johann Friedrich von Brandenburg-Ansbach, on December 1. Very rare, handsome patina, about extremely fine.)"
This rare commemorative was accompanied by a quarter thaler (KM 254) and a thaler (Dav-2096). The elector George II was also king George II of England.
