Hannover 1740-CPS thaler Dav-2089
This specimen was lot 5715 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$3,062 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Georg II. 1727-1760. Reichstaler 1740, Clausthal. Ausbeute der Grube St. Andreas. Mit Randschrift: º DAS * LAND * DIE * FRUCHTE * BRINGT * IM * HARTZ * DER * THALER * KLINGT. Von großer Seltenheit. Kräftige Patina, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 41, Osnabrück 1998, Nr. 1101. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, George II, 1727-60, thaler of 1740, Clausthal mint, for the St. Andrew mine. With lettered edge. Extremely rare, strongly toned, extremely fine.)"
This type depicting St. Andrew with his cross is recorded for 1730-60. It is not considered a rare type but the lettered edge may have made this example expensive. The elector George II was also king George II of England.
