SB1123-73604r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73604 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. Taler, 1741-IBH. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg II August (George II of Great Britain). PCGS EF-45. [A] steel-gray example with subtle champagne in the peripheries. Some slight planchet porosity and softly struck details but attractive nonetheless. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Includes ticket from Kuenker." George II issued two different thalers in 1741, the other being a leaping stallion thaler (Dav-2086). This fairly scarce wild man thaler, struck 1730-44, has the British arms on the obverse without the lion supporters used on Dav-2090. The very similar Dav-2092A, struck 1743, 1746-50 and 1755, has a more ornate shield.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-2092; KM-233; Welter-2559.
