Künker sale 293, lot 691

This specimen was lot 691 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €725 (about US$977 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, HERZOGTUM Georg II. 1727-1760. 16 Gute Groschen (1/2 Reichstaler) 1741, Clausthal. RR Hübsche Patina, sehr schön +. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg, George II, 1727-60, 16 gute groschen or half thaler of 1741, Clausthal mint. Rare, handsome patina, very fine or better.)"

The SCWC calls this a gulden (2/3 thaler) whereas Künker catalogued it as half a thaler. We can't be sure, because we don't have the weight, but we defer to Künker, noting the "½" stamped on the obverse. When the convention thaler was adopted in the mid-eighteenth century, it was set equal to 120 kreuzer or two gulden. This type is listed for 1741-43 and 1756 along with KM-272 with a leaping stallion obverse.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-444; Welter 2587, KM 280.
