Hannover 1740-IBH 2/3 thaler KM-229
This specimen was lot 73609 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1740-IBH. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg II August (George II of Great Britain). PCGS AU-55. The surfaces of this example are a pleasing dove gray with champagne in protected areas and exhibit a 'craquelure' appearance due to the particular metallurgy of the flan. The Wild Man is well-rendered in detail and the legends are bold. Minor softness is seen at the center of the shield on the reverse. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1730-43 with mintmaster IBH serving 1739-43 and is the most common for the date. Other gulden for 1740 include KM 226 (1740-CPS, bust obverse, very rare), KM 228 (1740-IBH, leaping stallion, rare), KM 264 (1740-CPS, leaping stallion, rare), KM 276 (1740-CPS, bust obverse, "REICHS FUSS" added, very scarce) and KM 277 (1740-CPS, leaping stallion, scarce).
