Hannover 1739-IAB 2/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 73608 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1739-IAB. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg II August (George II of Great Britain). PCGS AU-55. Argent surfaces are largely covered by a pleasing muted gold tone with splashes of subdued cobalt and plum. Well struck with only light wear commensurate for the grade. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1730-43 with mintmaster IBH serving 1739-43 and is the most common for the date. Other gulden for 1739 include KM 229 (1739-C, wild man reverse), KM 263 (1739-CPS, bust obverse, very rare), KM 264 (1739-CPS, leaping stallion, rare).
