Hannover 1737-IAB 1/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 73288 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 12 Mariengroschen (1/3 Taler), 1737-IAB. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg II August (George II of Great Britain). PCGS AU-58. Sharply struck and supremely elegant, this attractively toned minor sports a melange of iridescence as yields a good deal of remaining luster evident in the fields. What's more, the wildman himself stands in rather strong detail, making this an exceptional near-Mint example. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." The twelve mariengroschen was terminated after 1715. This one-third thaler, which superseded it, is listed for 1737-80. Mintmaster IAB appears for 1731-38.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
