This specimen is a common date of a series struck 1870-97 at the Zacatecas mint. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. This date marks the first in a series of “Z Z” errors, where the “s” was omitted from the mintmark. Similar errors are known for 1888, 1890, 1896 and 1897. This specimen was lot 9000 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $345.
