Mexico 1887-Mo M peso

from the Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 7829

This specimen was lot 7829 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $456. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Peso, 1887-Mo M. Mexico City Mint. PCGS Genuine--Filed Rims, Unc Details. Flashy and with a bold strike, this Mexico City Gold Peso comes from an original mintage of just 2,200. Deep and pleasing gold tones with minor toning streaks on the reverse. Overall a pleasing example, with the rim filing visible only from the edge of the coin." For the gold peso series, Mexico City is the commonest mint, followed by Guanajuato, Culiacan, Zacatecas (scarce), Hermosillo (rare), Alamos (rare) and Chihuahua (rare). Even the common dates have low mintages but the type was widely hoarded, making it reasonably available today.
