Shown is a balance scale fifty centavos, of a type struck 1869-1895. This issue from Durango is perhaps the most common for the mint. Like most fifty centavos, high grade specimens are extremely rare. Other mints include Hermosillo, Zacatecas, Alamos, City, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Culiacan and Potosi. A second assayer, H, is noted for the year but is very rare. The second specimen was lot 9166 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $517.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Durango. 50 Centavos, 1875-DoM. Rare condition for this mint. Weakly struck. NGC MS-61.”
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, .393 troy oz ASW.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
