Mexico 1875-Cn MP 8 reales

Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70378

This specimen was lot 70378 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1875-Cn MP. Culiacan Mint. NGC AU-58. This handsome gently circulated example displays even wear with attractive delicate patina. The strike is bold with nicely formed design features exhibits even wear. A pleasing example of the date." The Culiacan mint was opened in 1846 and struck all the silver and gold denominations. The early issues are scarce but become more common after 1855. The 1856 is scarce but not rare. Assayer CE is listed for 1846-70. The mint was closed in 1905 and was the last branch mint along with Zacatecas.
