This specimen was lot 21247 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $3,525. The catalog description[1] noted, "Exquisite & Finest Certified Zacatecas Gold 2 1/2 Pesos, 1875/3-ZsA. NGC MS-66. The single finest certified example for this date and type at either NGC or PCGS. Tied with three other gold 2 1/2 Pesos for finest certified for this type across all dates and mints. One year assayer and difficult to obtain in any condition. A true CONDITION RARITY. An exceptional piece that features a good strike and bountiful luster. A coin worth the chase." This type was struck at Zacatecas 1872-78 and 1888-90. The type is also recorded from Culiacan, Durango, Guanajuato, Alamos, Hermosillo and Mexico City but Mexico City is by far the most prolific issuer. The series, never popular, ended in 1893.
