This specimen was lot 70801 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1843-Pi AM. San Luis Potosi Mint. NGC AU-55. Flat topped 3 variety. Attractively toned with slight friction on the highest portions of the designs on both sides. A SCARCE date." This eight reales is one of a series struck 1827-93 at the San Luis Potosí mint. Production for 1843 was divded between assayer PS (1842-43, rather scarce) and assayer AM (1843-49, fairly common). Both assayers come with round-top 3 and flat top 3; an 1843/2 overdate also exists.
