This specimen was lot 489 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £1,200 (about US$1,859 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic, 8 reales, Hermosillo mint, 1864 FM, wide H in mintmark, centres weakly struck, very fine to good very fine, very rare. Ex Jess Peters, October 1970." The Hermosillo mint struck eight reales 1861-95 and this date, like most Hermosillo eight reales of 1861-67, is rare. Another assayer, PR, also exists for 1864 and is slightly more available. A few eight reales are known from the 1830's but they were probably illegal issues as the mint was not then authorized to strike silver.
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, 0.785 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: KM 377.9, DP-Ho04a.
