Morton & Eden sale 104, lot 491

This specimen was lot 491 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £2,400 (about US$3,717 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic, 8 reales, Hermosillo mint, 1865 FM, stop between F.M., virtually as struck, with usual die flaws in an early state, lightly toned, rare; a choice example of an 1865-dated cap and rays 8 reales." The Hermosillo mint struck eight reales 1861-95 and this date, like most Hermosillo eight reales of 1861-67, is rare. A few eight reales are known from the 1830's but they were probably illegal issues as the mint was not then authorized to strike silver.
