Künker sale 354, lot 5716

This specimen was lot 5716 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €160 (about US$223 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Georg II. 1727-1760. 4 Mariengroschen 1740, Zellerfeld. R Vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Erworben 1967 von H. Priesmeier. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, George II, 1727-60, four mariengroschen of 1740, Zellerfeld mint. Rare, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1730-60 and, while not rare, is expensive in good condition. Four mariengroschen = 1/9 thaler. The elector George II was also king George II of England.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver or billon, this specimen 2.16 g.

Catalog reference: KM 217, Welter Nachtrag 2625; Smith 175.
