The first specimen was lot 22058 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1867-Go YF. Guanajuato Mint. PCGS MS-66 Gold Shield. Virtually perfect, this stunning minor displays a bold strong and vivid tone that shows significant hues of mauve and orange-gold in the centers with blue, green and violet coloration around the outer edges. Certainly elusive in this technical quality, and notable as the single finest graded of this issue at PCGS, but beyond that, the most enchanting 1/2 Real from this series (from any mint) that this cataloger has ever seen, which absolutely places it in VERY RARE company. From the Matthew Orsini Collection." This Guanajuato issue is common in all grades. It marked a brief (1867-68) resumption of predecimal coinage after the ouster of the Maximilian regime and before the introduction of decimal coinage.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: .69 g, 0.903 fine silver, .049 troy oz ASW.
