This specimen was lot 72233 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Reales, 1614-S V. Seville Mint. Philip III. PCGS EF-40. This rustic Cob is well-preserved despite its crude production. The obverse shows a clear mintmark and assayer beside a Habsburg shield that shows sharp detail. The reverse displays a clear date and satisfying, albeit partially flat, castles and lions. The surfaces are somewhat rough but quite original and nicely toned with charcoal gray color in the protected areas. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type was struck at Seville 1601-04 and 1610-21. Other mints striking four reales during the reign of Philip II include Valladolid, Granada, Segovia, Toledo and Madrid. Assayer "V" is listed for 1612-15.
