SB1122-72234r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72234 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $630. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Reales, 1615-To. Toledo Mint. Philip III. PCGS AU-53. This attractive Cob offers a wealth of detail. While the mintmark is only faintly visible, the denomination and monarch's ordinal are boldly visible on the obverse. The reverse shows a full and clear date, along with "-NIARVM" on the outer legend. While the central devices on both sides are quite pleasing, the castles and lions on the reverse are particularly impressive. The surfaces are lightly toned and retain traces of luster. A problem-free example with uncommon eye appeal. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type was struck at Toledo 1602 and 1609-21. Other mints striking four reales during the reign of Philip II include Valladolid, Granada, Segovia, Seville and Madrid. The SCWC lists assayers "C" and "V" for 1615 while Cayón shows only "V".

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.73 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.74 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-4798, KM-33.5; Cal-846.
