Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 57810

This specimen was lot 57810 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Reales, 1617-S G. Granada Mint. Philip III. NGC VF-35." This type was struck 1599, 1601, 1610-21 at Seville, not Granada. Assayer G operated 1617-21. Common in low grade, it is scarce in collectible condition. Other mints striking four reales during the reign of Philip III include Valladolid, Granada, Segovia, Toledo and Madrid, not counting the Latin American mints.
