Spain 1617-Seg A+ 8 reales
The specimen shown was lot 123 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 2,900 euros (about US$4,785 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1617. Segovia. &. 8 reales. 5 flores de lis. Muy bella. Parte de brillo original. Rara así. EBC+. (Spain, Eight reales of 1617, Segovia mint, variety with five fleurs-de-lys. Very nice, some original luster and rare thus; choice extremely fine.)
This type was issued at Toledo, Seville and Segovia 1610-21. Two varieties are listed for 1617, with or without punctuation in the date. The aqueduct was the mintmark for the Segovia mint until it closed in the 1840's.
