Aureo y Calicó sale 422, lot 2584

This specimen was lot 2584 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 25 € (about US$33 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1617. Felipe III. Barcelona. 1 ardit. MBC [very fine]." This type was struck in Barcelona 1612-21 and is not listed as expensive in low grade altho hammered coins are very scarce in nice condition. We don't know the Spanish equivalent of this coin but we guess it was worth about one maravedi. The obverse features the arms of Catalonia and the reverse is the bust of Philip II, who died in 1598. Very similar coins were struck for Philip IV.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, this specimen 1,59 g.

Catalog reference: KM 13, AC. 28, Cayón-4205.
