Sedwick Treasure Auction 36, lot 1675

This specimen was lot 1675 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Seville, gold cob 2 escudos, 1617 D. XF with full date and S-D plus clear king's ordinal, bold shield and cross (the latter doubled), scratches and punch-mark on reverse." This type was struck 1601-21 at Seville with assayer D mentioned for 1612, 1615, 1617 and 1619. This issue is mentioned twice in the SCWC, under KM 20 and KM 48.3. We beieve KM 20 is intended for the date to the left of the cross (shown here) and KM 48.3 for the date on top. As most examples don't have legible dates, we aren't sure how they can be attributed.

Specification: 6.87 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 6.66 grams.
