Spain 1610-S B 2 escudos
The first specimen shown was lot 120 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 17,000 € (about US$26,394 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Felipe III (1598-1621). 1610. Sevilla. B. 2 escudos. Una pieza similar, pero del año 1612, realizó 8000 € en la colección Caballero de las Yndias. Bellísima. Brillo original. Rarísima. S/C-. (Philip III (1598-1621) of Spain, two escudos of 1610, Seville mint. A similar piece dated 1612 realized 8,000 € in the Caballero de las Yndias sale. Spectacular, original luster, extremely rare, about uncirculated.)"
The second specimen was lot 11 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[2] noted, "SPAIN, Seville, gold cob 2 escudos, Philip III, assayer B, OMNIVM in legend, NGC AU 58. Bold S-B to left of full shield, nearly full cross (off-center), peripherally flat but with O of OMNIVM visible, lightly toned." This type is recorded for 1601-20 with all dates noted as scarce. It is hammered. The second specimen, because of a weak strike and poor centering, lacks a date; this occurs in the majority of survivors.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.87 g, 0.917 fine gold, .202 troy oz AGW, the second specimen 6.76 grams.
