Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 8250

This specimen was lot 8250 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Reales, 1613-To C. Toledo Mint. Philip III. NGC MS-61. A broadly struck coin with a fair amount of detail throughout, right up to the edge of the flan. The mintmark and assayer letter are clear, along with most of the date in the reverse periphery. The surfaces are toned a light, dusty gray throughout." This cob was issued from Toledo 1602 and 1609-21. Assayers C and V are both recorded for 1613. Similar cobs were produced at Madrid, Valladolid, Seville and Segovia. Segovia also issued milled 4 reales.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date for the type.

Specification: 13.73 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.67 g.
