Spain 1614-Seg AR 4 reales
This specimen was lot 2046 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Segovia, milled 4 reales, Philip III, 1614/0 AR/C, NGC AU details / cleaned, finest and only example in NGC census. Clear 1614/0 overdate and also clear over-assayer AR/C (erroneously labeled by NGC as AR/G, but the only one listed for this date in any form), which is unlisted in KM, and in Calicó appears with a high catalog value, this example well centered and boldly struck, with high points a little bright from past cleaning though toned with colorful hues in the legends." The Segovia mint was the first mint to convert to milled coinage. This four reales was struck there 1614-17 and 1620-21 along with eight reales. This is the only date with assayer AR. Other mints for 1614 include Seville, Toledo and Granada. The arms of Spain on the obverse bear the escutcheon of Portugal, ruled by Spain 1580-1640.
