Sincona sale 23, lot 3193

This specimen was lot 3193 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 160 CHF (about US$201 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SPANIEN, Königreich, Felipe III. 1598-1621 4 Reales 1611. Toledo Sehr schön. (kingdom of Spain, Philip III (1598-1621), four reales of 1611, Toledo mint, very fine.)"

This cob four reales is noted from Toledo for 1602-21. Similar four reales are recorded from Granada, Valladolid and Segovia. Cob coinage was struck in Spain until the 1660's, finally being edged out by milled coinage. The issue of cobs would continue in Latin America until the 1770's.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rather scarce.
