Spain 1611-Seg A 2 reales
This specimen was lot 73022 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 2 Reales, 1611-A. Segovia Mint. Philip III. NGC AU-55. 'Old House' design. Date is above the cross on the reverse, a bit clipped, yet still legible. The cross itself is full, as are the lions and castles within the cross. The assayer initial, 'A', is well defined." The Segovia mint had been milling coins since the 1590's but occasionally reverted to hammering cobs, as here. Cayón mentions a milled two reales for 1611 with assayer A and this hammered four reales for 1611, also with assayer A who reappears 1616-18 and 1620-21. Cayón also notes a milled four reales from Segovia for 1611 with assayer C (Cayón-4762).
