Sedwick 38-0123r.jpg

This specimen was lot 123 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $5,100. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 2 reales, Philip III, assayer RL (curved leg), Grade 1. Brightly cleaned but practically corrosion-free, with bold and full assayer and (oddly narrow) shield, full but doubled cross, broad flan with clear PHILIPVS III (backwards S) in legend. With Fisher tag and photo-certificate 86A-132549-1. Recovered from Atocha, sunk in 1622 west of Key West, Florida." The SCWC notes both assayer R and RL for this period. We will let the reader decide which appears here. Dates were added in 1617 and struck in this form until 1621. This example realized ten times the catalog value.
