Spain (1556-98)-S D 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 31690 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "Philip II gold Cob 2 Escudos ND (1556-98) S-D MS64 NGC, Seville mint. It is unusual enough to find this crude cob type in Mint State, let alone an MS64 example such as this. Centrally and definitively struck, this coin exhibits substantial luster over crisp, choice details. Certainly one of the finest certified, a stunning specimen worthy of a premium collection." This issue comes with a square "D" (shown here), a normal "D" (Cayón-4095) or missing the king's ordinal (Cayón-4097). It was almost certainly struck prior to 1589-90, as that is when the Spanish mints began dating their product.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold.
