Spain (1556-98)-S D 4 escudos
The first specimen was lot 2930 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Felipe II. 1556-1598. 4 Escudos o. J. Sevilla. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. NGC AU58. Überdurchschnittlich gut ausgeprägt. (kingdom of Spain, Philip II, 1556-98, undated four escudos, Seville mint. Rare in this condition, Extremely well struck, about uncirculated.)"
The second specimen was lot 23531 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $6,600. The catalog description[2] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Escudos, ND (1566-87)-S F. Seville Mint. Philip II. PCGS MS-62. Extremely appealing and attractive, this nearly-Choice specimen radiates with originality and crispness, with alluring color and eye appeal. Almost never encountered in such a tantalizing state or preservation, making this an example that should generate a great deal of consideration and spirited bidding. From the David Sterling Collection." Assayer F is not listed for the Seville mint in this period. We believe the second specimen is also assayer D from a bad die. The assayer's initial is the square "D" below the "S". The Seville began dating its product in 1588, so these coins were likely made before that.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.74 g, 0.931 fine silver, the first specimen 13.46 g, the second specimen 13.51 g.
