Stephen Album sale 43, lot 1390

The first specimen was lot 34374 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain: Philip II 4 Reales ND (1556-1598)-DD MS62 PCGS, Seville mint, A sharp strike, bearing deeply-engraved devices and luminous fields, graced by marigold toning." The second specimen was lot 1390 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it sold for $390. The catalog description[2] noted, "SPAIN: Felipe II, 1556-1598, AR 4 reales, Seville, ND, variety with lis between shield and crown // square D, nicely struck with many of the details present, NGC graded AU58." This type was hammered at Segovia, Seville, Toledo, Valencia and Valladolid. Dates were added starting in 1589-90. The assayer's initial "D" appears in different locations; the first example shows them on the third and fourth quarters of the lions and castles side. It also has a lily between the shield and the crown; many lack this feature.

Specification: 13.54 g 0.931 fine silver, the first specimen 13.42 g, the second specimen 13.6 g.

Catalog reference: the first specimen Cayón-3789, Cal-393. The second specimen is Cayón-3786.
