Spain (1566-89)-G A 4 reales
This specimen was lot 72217 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Reales, ND (1566-98)-G A. Granada Mint. Philip II. PCGS AU-53. This well-preserved 4 Reales piece exhibits abundant luster and attractive gunmetal gray toning. Though there are some areas of weak strike, most details, such as the mintmark, assayer, and denomination, remain quite clear. The reverse displays sharp castles and unusually large lions with a touch of doubling. A pleasing example with plenty of eye appeal and originality. From the Pat Johnson Collection." Undated four reales are known from Cuenca, Granada (assayer A shown here plus assayers D and F), Segovia, Seville, Toledo, Valladolid and Valencia, not counting the American mints. The Spanish mints starting dating their product in 1590, so we assume the coin was struck before then.
