Spain (1576-87)-G Fo 4 reales
This specimen was lot 72218 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Reales, ND (1576-87)-G Fo. Granada Mint. Philip II. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. This Spanish Cob shows bright surfaces and quite clear details. The coin has been extensively cleaned as noted on the PCGS holder, but it remains a well-struck and attractive example. From the Pat Johnson Collection." Undated four reales are known from Cuenca, Granada (assayer F shown here plus assayers D and A), Segovia, Seville, Toledo, Valladolid and Valencia, not counting the American mints. The Spanish mints starting dating their product in 1590, so we assume the coin was struck before then. Cayón states this type comes with the mintmark on the left (shown here) or on the right.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.76 g.
