This specimen was lot 72226 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Reales, ND (1566-88)-Ao. Valladolid Mint. Philip II. PCGS AU-58+. This highly original 4 Reales piece displays light gray toning and bright original luster. Most of the outer legends are visible and sharply readable, along with quite clear mintmark, assayer, and denomination. A beautiful coin, not commonly seen in this grade. From the Pat Johnson Collection." The mintmark of the Valladolid mint was three pennants flapping in the breeze. The Valladolid mint struck coins by the hammer until 1613. Never a major mint, most of its products are scarce today.
