Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 165

This specimen was lot 165 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$1,980 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"s/d. Felipe II. Valladolid. A. 2 escudos. Ni V.Q. ni Carles Tolrá tenían ninguna pieza de este valor, rey y ceca). Armas de Flandes y Tirol intercambiadas. Los jirones con línea vertical. La P de PHILIPPVS rectificada sobre otra. Preciosa pátina. Muy rara. MBC+. (kingdom of Spain, Philip II, 1556-98, undated two escudos, Valladolid mint. Arms of Flanders and Tyrol interchanged and the mintmark in a vertical line. The P in PHILIPPVS is punched over another. Precious patina, very rare, choice very fine.)"

Altho not dated, this coin was almost certainly struck prior to 1589-90, as that is when the Spanish mints began dating their product. The Valladolid mintmark was not a letter but three pennants flying.

Recorded mintage: unknown but Valladolid is a rare mint.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 6,55 g.

Catalog reference: AC. 877, Tauler 71 var. Fr-171, Cayón-4107.
