Aureo y Calicó sale 447, lot 1152

This specimen was lot 1152 in Aureo y Calicó sale 447 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 1,800 € (about US$2,351 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "s/d. Felipe II. Toledo. C. 2 escudos. Light filings on edge. Scarce. MBC [very fine]." This type was struck at the Toledo mint with the escutcheon of Portugal, which was united with Spain 1580-1640. Two escudos were also struck at Burgos, Granada, Valladolid, Cuenca and Seville. The Seville mint started dating its product in 1588, the Toledo mint in 1590.
