Spain 1590-S H 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 6 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 35 (Winter Park, FL, May 2024), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Seville, gold cob 2 escudos, 1590 date to right, assayer H below mintmark S and denomination II to left, NGC AU details / damaged. Full date to right of nice full shield with clear S-II-H to left (label says assayer D in error), the cross also full but off-center and with peripheral gouge and light scratches, light toning in crevices." The 1590's were a period of transition at the Spanish mints as milling machinery was introduced. This specimen is of the older cob style. Cayón lists only assayer D for 1590.
