Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 52608

This specimen was lot 52608 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 8 Reales, 1590-i/M. Segovia Mint. Philip II. NGC AU-55. A fairly RARE type from later in the reign of Philip II, this lightly handled survivor retains a good deal of central detail, with pleasing overall gunmetal gray tone. A fairly typical flan split is noted merely for completeness." It was offered again as lot 42644 in Stack's Bowers 2024 ANA sale, where it sold for $1,050. Cayón notes that this cob type was struck at the "casa vieja" (old mint) in 1589 (Cayón-3999), 1593 (Cayón-4034), 1597 (Cayón-4054/4055) and undated (Cayón-3940). The new mint in Segovia was striking milled coinage, the first in Spain.
