Spain 1590-To M 4 reales
This specimen was lot 8214 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $630. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Reales, 1590-To M. Toledo Mint. Philip II. NGC AU-53. Pop: 1, none graded finer by NGC. Type with 'M' assayer letter in circle, and the two last digits of the date on the right side of the shield, below denomination. A broadly struck coin with visible mintmark, assayer letter, and date. The central devices are well detailed and problem-free, with dusty gray toning throughout." This type was struck at several mints late in the reign of Philip II, about the same time as the Segovia mint was experimenting with milled coins. Assayer M is listed for 1590-93, sometimes within a circle, sometimes not.
