Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 8213

This specimen was lot 8213 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $810. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 8 Reales, 1590-S D. Seville Mint. Philip II. NGC AU-55. Pop: 1, one graded finer by NGC. Square 'D' Variety. A well struck Cob with nearly complete detail on the central devices, and a good deal of visible peripheral legends. The date and assayer letter are bold. One crack in the planchet is noted at 12 o'clock." These hammered eight reales were struck at Granada (Dav-8476), Segovia (Dav-8477), Seville (shown here), Toledo (Dav-8481, -8482) and Valladolid (Dav-8483, -8484). Assayer D and H are noted for 1590.
