Obverse: "Philip by the grace of God Spain..."; reverse: "...and the Indies king, 1589." Mintmark: aqueduct with two storeys and four arches. attractive toning, very rare thus, choice extremely fine.)

The second specimen was lot 99153 in Heritage sale 61253 (Dallas, January 2022), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain: Philip II 8 Reales 1589-(Aqueduct) AU58 NGC, Segovia mint. A sharp emission of this earlier milled 8 Reales issue produced at the state-of-the-art Segovia mint using the newest technology of the age. Strikingly sharp throughout, with ultra-fine die polish lining the fields vertically, containing traces of golden undertone against an overlying steel patina. For accuracy, we note a thin scratch in the upper right quadrant of the reverse polylobe. Highly compelling in hand, and given its position in the earlier part of the Spanish milled series, especially desirable." This type, one of the first machine struck coins of Spain, is recorded in Cayón[3] for 1586-1597. Numerous varieties exist, all rare. The arms of Spain on the obverse bear the escutcheon of Portugal, ruled by Spain 1580-1640.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.47 g, 0.931 fine silver, .821 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Dav-8478, Cal-204, Cayón-3995. The second specimen Cal-704, Cayón-3991.
