Aureo sale 238, lot 503

This specimen was lot 503 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 1,900 euro (about US$3,013 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1597. Segovia. 8 reales. Leyenda: OMNIUM. Adornos acotando ceca y valor. Muy rara. MBC/MBC+. (eight reales of 1597, Segovia mint, obverse legend: OMNIUM; arms divide value and mintmark. Very rare, very fine.)"

This type, one of the first machine struck coins of Spain, is recorded in Cayón[2] for 1586-1597. Numerous varieties exist, all rare. The arms of Spain on the obverse bear the escutcheon of Portugal, ruled by Spain 1580-1640.
