Spain (1535-56)-S escudo
The first specimen was lot 31689 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles & Johanna gold Cob Escudo ND (1516-56) XF40 NGC, Seville mint. A pleasing central strike retaining a good coverage of detail, S to the right and star assayer to the left of the shield. Lightly toned, an attractive specimen." The second specimen was lot 3 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[2] noted, "Seville, Spain, 1 escudo, Charles-Joanna, assayer * to right, mintmark S to left. Broad-flan AU+ with choice full details and attractive color, tiny bit of doubling, minor flat spot near edge." This issue comes with a star on the left (Cayón-3147, first specimen), a star on the right (Cayón-3146, second specimen) or a square "D" (Cayón-3148 and -3149). Cayón states that this type was restruck in 1599-1602.
