This specimen was lot 1 in Sedwick sale 34 (Winter Park, FL, November 2023), where it sold for $4,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Segovia, Spain, gold 1 escudo, Charles-Joanna, assayer A above ringlet to left, mintmark aqueduct between ringlets to right, NGC MS 61. Bold full mintmark to left and assayer to right, crisp full details in shield and cross and nearly full legends, lustrous yellow color with satin-smooth fields, tiny edge-split, scarce mint, second finest in NGC census behind a single MS 64." Cayón states that this type was restruck 1599-1602, long after both Carlos and Juana were dead. It is noted with assayers A (shown here), D, D rotated, I and P. Escudos were also struck at Burgos, Cuenca, Granada, Seville and Toledo with a face value of 350 maravedis (later raised to 544 maravedis).

Juana, the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella, was declared unfit to rule after the death of her husband Philip in 1506. Ferdinand acted as regent until his death in 1516, whereupon her son Charles took over that role. She survived until 1556.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
