Spain (1535-56)-Seg D escudo
This specimen was lot 144 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 3,000 € (about US$3,919 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "n/d (circa 1535). Juana and Carlos. Segovia. 1 escudo. Obv.: Coat of arms between D and aqueduct. IOANA●ET●KAROLVS DEI GRA. Rev.: +H(ISPA)NIARVN●E REGIS●ET●DEI GR. Attractive. Rare. EBC- [about extremely fine]." Cayón states that this type was restruck 1599-1602, long after both Carlos and Juana were dead. It is noted with assayers A, D (shown here), D rotated, I and P. Escudos were also struck at Burgos, Cuenca, Granada, Seville and Toledo with a face value of 350 maravedis (later raised to 544 maravedis).
Juana, the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella, was declared unfit to rule after the death of her husband Philip in 1506. Ferdinand acted as regent until his death in 1516, whereupon her son Charles took over that role. She survived until 1556.
